“Fun ‘staycation’ night”
We have been wanting to stay at this “boutique hotel” for awhile. Have dined there and had cocktails but never stayed at the hotel. It was a lot of fun. We stayed on a Wednesday which is Dive-In Theatre night. Movie on a big screen, poolside. They were playing Pulp Fiction. Lots of people watching and enjoying. It did get a little loud though when we retired to our room….not the people, the movie. We were downstairs, so I think when we return we will get an upstairs room. One of the very cool things……a fish bowl with a fish in every room. Ours was named Jaws:-) can’t wait to go back! -Hotel Guests, Tripadvisor February 2013
“I recently had the pleasure of staying in this boutique hotel, for a wedding. The staff were extremely friendly and accomodating (with great patience !) The rooms were nicely decorated, very clean and every need was taken care of. The food was amazing and plentiful, do not have one complaint. I would, without hesitation, stay at this hotel again and recommend to my friends, family and clients (I am a travel partner).” -Hotel Guests, Tripadvisor November 2012
“WARM AND WONDERFUL WELCOME!”
“From the moment we arrived, we were treated like best friends! Thanks to the wonderful staff, Josh, Kim, Emily and Danielle who helped us make our first visit to San Diego ….not our last! Who wouldn’t love a place where your room comes with a comfortable king sized bed, and your own pet fish? The location was very good if you have a car…close to the airport, downtown and the beaches. We parked on the residential streets behind the hotel for free… no problem with that, or you can pay $10 a night to park on the property. We had dinner at the hotel the first night, and it was very good and fairly priced… we booked for 3 nights but liked it so much that we stayed a 4th… and for our last night before getting back on the plane in LAX, Kim made some calls and found us a nice place to stay in Venice Beach. Nothing seemed too much trouble for this team! Love this place, and would go back in a heartbeat! They made us feel very special, and when leaving hugs were given!” -Hotel Guests, Tripadvisor November 2012
“I love this place.”
“My brother had his wedding reception here but that’s not why I love this place. I actually mentioned this place because they wanted a nontraditional reception with a party kinda vibe and this is the perfect spot for it. It was intimate but still really fun. And having all your friends and family book a room for the night – what bigger and better slumber party can you get?
Before I go on, shout out to Danielle. She was so cool, helpful and very accommodating with everything and also to the owner Greg Strangman who we met at the food tasting. Awesome people.
Let’s talk about the bar and food first. They serve dinner and I gotta say the food is excellent. I’ve been here for dinner once and loved the food and ambiance. Bar is fully stocked and bartenders are cool.
Their menu changes often (I think seasonal) but during our tasting we had lobster bisque, bacon wrapped scallops, crab cakes, mac and cheese and pork tenderloin. All of which was pretty much amazing. See my photos! Note on Thursdays that they play movies on their outdoor screen. Perfect for date night.
That night I had a mule, or several – which are as good as the ones I first tried at Starlite.
The decor at The Pearl is totally my style. It’s got a one of kind feel with mid century pieces throughout, boutique-like accents with modern and industrial finishings. I’d live here if I could.
The pool is also heated.
The rooms are also an extension of the decor. They’ve got a low class, high class budget feel. I guess the best way to describe it would be shabby chic modern without being too pretentious.
For locals, it’s a perfect staycation, overnighter or just a cool night out.
For tourists, I would recommend this place over anything by Shelter Island. It’s a quick drive to that area of even a walk to some cool spots in Point Loma.

“Heaven. On. Earth. Love love this place. I live in San Diego and staycation here regularly! The nicest staff ever – mainly the reason we return. Not only have I had my favorite meals here, but also my Fave cocktails. It is kitschy but elegant, and cozy while keeping an immaculate appearance. The salt water pool is amazing, and I even LOVE the coffee they serve in the a.m.! So good! It is super SoCal in the vibe, in step with throwback mid century mo but contemporary. The bartenders check in staff, and especially the restaurant manager have been so accommodating every time!” -Tripadvisor, September 2012
“Our entire stay was perfect”
“The Pearl Hotel is truly a pearl. My boyfriend and I rented a private home for the weekend in SD and needed a hotel for one night, until we could check-in to our rental. I found The Pearl Hotel on Yelp and booked it for our stay. From the moment we entered, till we left, our entire stay was perfect. Great boutique hotel with a distinct vintage 1940s-1950s personality. The room was perfect and we kept saying how much we loved the bed. We had dinner at their restaurant at the pool, while old technicolor movies played. Blue cheese stuffed, bacon wrapped dates, best burger in town, meatloaf and locally brewed beers. Yum! Staff is on point and friendly. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a more intimate stay.” – Tiffany, Hotel Guest August 2012
“LOVE LOVE LOVE this place”
“My hubby and I just celebrated our anniversary at The Pearl. It is PERFECTLY decorated in midcentury style which compliments the boutique 1950’s architecture. The food is amazing, the drinks are delectable and the staff….OUT OF THIS WORLD! Super cool place to spend a day, afternoon and evening… The pool is darling and great for these warm summer afternoons. Wednesday evening movie nights by the pool are also a must do. The rooms are small, but perfectly appointed. We had a nice sized patio that made the room feel larger and the room fish, Wolfgang made for a more organic stay. LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. We will be back again….and again. XO.” – Erika, Hotel Guest July 2012
“I cannot stay away”
“I have had nearly every one of Chef Jaison Burkes’ creations. Sourced locally and often organic, it is the cream of the proverbial crop! The staff now recognizes me, because I cannot stay away. Amazing ingredients prepared in magnificent concoctions and paired with stellar hand-crafted cocktails. All of my out-of-town guests get to come here, and that is a privilege! The only way my love could grow for this place is if they hired me and I got to go every day!” – Hartley, Hotel Guest June 2012
“Swank Mother’s Day Brunch!!!”
“Most epic Mother’s Day our family has had in a very long time! We were able to all come together in a unique & fun setting. Kid’s were occupied, adults had a blast…mom’s (6 of us) were able to relax & enjoy our food, the pool, the cabana, & the room, in a close & engaging atmosphere…we were all able to reconnect with each other in this venue…AWESOME!!!
The staff was the icing on our cake…red velvet that is, thanks y’all…YOWSA, THE PEARL’s a real gem!!!” – Carla, May 2012
“The complete package! A great hotel, wonderful food and an amazing staff!!”
“I recently stayed at The Pearl with several of my friends and the place was fabulous! The layout of the hotel was perfect for several people traveling together. It had an intimate feel where everyone was comfortable and at home while offering great food and a fun bar scene for the evenings. The staff went above and beyond in terms of service. I’ve never stayed somewhere with such a friendly and helpful staff. Thanks to them I had an amazing birthday celebration. They offered awesome recommendations for dinners, were extremely accommodating with random requests and even gave me a beautiful cheese plate on the house when they found out it was my birthday! I would definitely go back and I highly recommend them while staying in San Diego! ” – Emily, March 2012
“It’s just too fun. Loved it”
“Went to the Pearl Hotel with my boyfriend and a couple of his buddies. I had driven by a couple times before, but didn’t realize the Pearl has a restaurant and bar!
Our group was there for drinks, and got super delicious beers (My new favorite: Green Flash Brewing Company’s DOUBLE STOUT! AMAZING) and the Curious George cocktail (So good!).
Honestly, the environment is so nice and you’re able to just talk with the bartenders and hang out by the pool or in the lounge to talk or play games. It’s just too fun. Loved it” – Suzi, February 2012
“The best atmosphere in San Diego hotel!”
“My week stay from Christmas to Jan 2nd. This hotel is a hidden gem. The locals come for the stylish restaurant’s food and the Wednesday night movie. The big screen is played outside around the pool area. Where the staff opens up the patio doors from the restaurant to the pool. This makes it feel like a family type atmosphere with everyone staying here. The staff was amazing, from the check it to the upper management! This place is fine dining with great hotel rooms. They try really hard to please everyone with even having bingo night to entertain the guests and they have really cool gifts. A special thanks to managers Kimberly and Danielle for our morning coffee chats and making my stay the most enjoyable vacation ever.”

“A friendly boutique hotel. Well designed. Urban hip without being pretentious. And VERY affordable. None of the loud chaotic scene and traffic headache of staying downtown but only 10 minutes away… so a great way to be in the heart of SD while keeping a distance from the drunk goofballs and mid west tourists that that flock to downtown on the weekends. We jogged along the harbor for sunset and enjoyed a cocktail at the cool bar in the evening. I like that it is small and feels like friends run it. Very friendly staff. All around, an excellent stay. We were there in Jan so perhaps during the summer, it is a pumping scene but it felt pretty relaxed – which we enjoyed.”

Restaurant at The Pearl
“Always wanted to go here and so glad I finally did”
“This is my new favorite American restaurant. The food is amazing. Everything I’ve had was super yummy. I’m not much of a meat eater, but I’ve never had short ribs so good! The decor and ambiance make it great too. Retro 70’s, yet modern, beach club thing. A movie screen across the pool and a game room with a shag rug and pillows. Really excellent service all around.”

“… heard that it was a hidden gem! They were right!”
“Outstanding! I just love the atmosphere here! I came in with some of my girlfriends for some dinner and wine. I had never been here before but had heard that it was a hidden gem! They were right! We all split some of the bacon wrapped dates. They were very tasty as well as the Kale salad.
The service here is just as great as the food. I felt right at home. Our waitress made me want to become friends with her! I came in again a couple weeks later and sat at the bar. The bar tender was very friendly. He definitely knew his stuff. He made me a special spicy ginger drink. Mmmmmm….”

“It was unexpected and wonderful!”
“For our 6-monthiversary, my boyfriend took me to the Restaurant at the Pearl and it was one of the best evenings. Hands down. We dressed to the 9’s, as is our style when going out for special occasions, and though we were well over-dressed we felt comfortable, well take care of, and incredibly happy.
Seated outside on a summery Monday night, it was pleasant and we just loved the retro decor of the outdoor pool area. A large projector screen played old movies in silence as we enjoyed our drinks (I got the Pearl’s Pimm’s Cup – refreshingly delicious!) and heating lamps were available for when it got just a little chilly. The service was impeccable. Our waitress was a complete sweetheart and very attentive, and when we ordered our cheese pairing platter the chef (at least… that’s who we believe he was) came out and explained each cheese and where they get it from (Venisimo’s in Mission Hills). It was unexpected and wonderful! The dinner was delicious. We ordered the Eggplant Parmesean which to me was one of the best I’d had since I don’t like a lot of sauce and love lightly breaded really crispy eggplant… and the Farm Salad, can’t go wrong with fried goat cheese and beets! And then the beignets with chocolate sauce. Hnngg, heaven. We received complimentary champagne with a smile and a “congrats!” from our waitress (I’m kicking myself for not getting her name), and spent the rest of our time just enjoying conversation and the ambiance. We will, without a doubt, be returning.”

“Unfortunately, The Pearl used to be just outside of my radar.”
“I had been here for a couple parties but after last night’s dinner, it’s for sure been engraved as a go to spot in my head. Our server Jesse was awesome and funny. Kept joking with us every time she came to check on us. We took a table outside near the pool and we all were digging the 60’s pool party vibe the Pearl has. My drink of choice was the British Juan which was made with Gin, Cilantro, Mango, and Ginger Beer. I think I had 6 of these bastards, they were damn good.
For an appetizer our group ordered the Mussels Sofrito which included Bone Marrow buttered bread. I was amazed with the good amount of Mussels that came with the order. So damn good! Especially the broth they came in. For my main I got the Diver Scallops with corn risotto. I tried some of what my wife ordered, which was good too, but I was pretty satisfied with my excellent choice. Overall, we had an awesome time. I want to come back to a movie night and just hang out in the pool. I wonder if they would serve me Scallops in the pool?

“Each course better than the last”
“I recently went back to The Pearl for their first Monday of the month beer dinner and my expectations were exceeded.
We were sat with roughly 12 other people, including Gwenn from Lost Abbey brewery in San Marcos at a well-decorated intimate table poolside to enjoy a lovely three-course meal. Each course was paired beautifully with a hand-selected beer from Lost Abbey and presented by the chef in person. Each course better than the last, and the discussion was fun and informative.
I highly recommend attending one of these festive events. It’s good for anyone, from the beer/foodie novice to the sophisticated palate, and everyone in between.
WELL DONE! Cheers!”

“Like staying at a hip, fun friend’s house”
“Stayed at The Pearl for the weekend with my husband – our third time, and it just gets better! The Pearl is retro-modern hip, but without the attitude. Design is simple, comfortable, inventive, tasteful…and just cool. Arrived late Friday night to a busy bar- this place is happening, which we loved! We had a drink and then went to our room (23), a little worried if it would be loud, and were pleasantly surprised that it was not. Slept like a log in the amazingly comfortable bed.
Had a wonderful dinner Saturday night – this place makes the best soups, the best burger and the best beignets ever! But what really sets this place apart is the service, from the front desk, to the bar, to the restaurant…they seem genuinely interested in making sure you have a great, fun stay.
Will be back…”

“The Best Place Ever”
“Without a doubt the best service ever, the friendliest staff so helpful. I really do think it was the best birthday present ever!!!!!!!!So urban hip, I was always happy to come “home” to see smiling faces and Rambo swimming in the light. I can’t wait to go back that’s all I am asking for my Birthday this year. Just can’t express how awesome it was, great vibe, food, and the dive in was fabulous, hope to return soon. ”
